about

What would you say if I sang in tune?

In the summer of two-thousand-something, I experienced a feeling that the whole universe was profoundly connected. At the time, I was working as a hand on a construction site, doing night shifts tearing down offices so they could be replaced by meaner ones. The job was brutal, cutting through plaster walls with power saws from 7pm til 2am and cleaning up heaps and heaps of rubble, breathing twenty kinds of cancerous dust. Of course, working with a team of subnormals made it all the more special, stealing cans from the breakroom vending machine and pissing in plastic bottles.
What made it really special however, was the music.
The guys had figured that they each needed their own radio, which were on non stop, full blast. Sometimes they managed to play the same stations which made the cacophony even weirder as the dispersed frequencies created flanged, phased and delayed versions. After weeks of hearing a heinous mix of FM hits new and old interspersed with incomprehensible voices and patronizing commercial breaks, something came over me one night. I felt dizzy, a rush of panic, so I stopped and looked around me. They were all at it, power tools mangling the drab surfaces amid a thick fog of plaster dust, broken only by the beams of worklights and the silouhettes of my radio friends, a thousand songs playing all at once. And I entered it, that wall of sound, distorted choruses and antagonistic hooks, power drill solos and jackhammer drum fills, and I felt a warmth. This was the shit! These had to be the most cutting-edge artists of our time! And I understood them! These were not-so-honest men doing a not-so-honest job but I didn't have to resent them. I needed to honour their sacrifice - and mine - of time and sanity, with a fitting tribute.
The next day at home, I plugged my radio into every piece of gear I had and fired up the tape recorder. Somewhere inside every office wall, there's a bottle of piss. This is what it sounds like.
